Weather
The attendees of the symposium were able to witness first hand the rainiest September
in Tampere since 1946. The precipitation during the first ten days of September 2001
was 157 mm (measured at the Tampere-Pirkkala airport). As shown in the map below,
Tampere was the rainiest place in Finland at that time.
The precipitation in Tampere during all of September was 179 mm. This is the all-time high in the
recorded observations in Tampere and three times more than the long-term average of 60 mm.
The previous record on September 1946 was 126 mm.
Update: The precipitation in Tampere during all of September 2003 was 10 mm. This is the all-time low in the
recorded observations in Tampere.

After the rainy start, September was actually sunny in Finland, temperature reaching all-time high (for September) in several places. In Tampere
the highest temperature was 21.5 °C measured on September 19.
The end of the month was significantly cooler. A cold front pushed trough Finland from
the north on September 22-23 and the daily temperatures quickly dropped below 10 °C.
