  • Year: 2017

STEPS

Aim

The project was coordinated by Changemaker, the youth network of Finn Church Aid and was supported by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture.

The aim of this project was to give asylum seekers an opportunity and a platform to raise their voice in Finland, and to support their active participation in society.

Implementation

Together with Ronan Browne we were instructors and organizers of the film making workshop held in Jyväskylä. Over the course of three months we had weekly meetings with a group of young asylum seekers preparing them for the realization of their short documentary movie.

Every meeting was dedicated to different aspect of film/documentary making: subject choice, storyboarding, techniques of interviewing, filming and editing. We discussed these subjects and perform simple practical tasks.

Results

The final screening of ready movies was held at Gloria Multicultural Center. For the communication of the final event I prepared the graphics you see at the top of the page.

We presented Behind the burqa
,in which the random Finnish passersby were asked to wear the burqua and express their feelings. Another short video, Positive & Negative, presents a story of two friends searching for asylum in Finland. All of the videos are available at Youtube channel of ChangemakerFinland.
