Technology of LIBS Imaging
Scanning Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy for Geology
Scanning Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy(LIBS) or Laser Spark Spectroscopy is an emerging technology for elemental, mineralogical and general material imaging. The past years have seen a great surge of laser spark spectroscopy into new devices, new fields of application and new and old companies forming to provide products and services around this technology.
The purpose of my dissertation is to present methods and technology of scanning LIBS. This thesis uses examples from one of these applications, scanning LIBS for geology, which has big impact possibilities for mining industry, but is also intended as a showcase of how this technology could be adapted for new purposes as well.
Methodology of scanning laser spark spectroscopy is presented in terms of two different equipment descriptions and multiple mathematical methods along with their source implementation
This topic is presented on my website where I tried to gather the most practically useful knowledge I learned during this work for those others struggling with how to actually do LIBS analysis. The website is both a part of this thesis and a separate project to communicate LIBS knowledge to wider audience.
(Note on the terminology: LIBS, LIPS, and LSS refer to the same technology it just has many names: Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, Laser-Induced Plasma Spectroscopy, Laser Spark Spectroscopy,. I will throughout the text use both the term Laser Spark Spectroscopy and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy. The former because Laser Spark Spectroscopy is a much better term in understanding that it is about and the latter because it is the more common term. We use (1) laser to make a (2) spark that emits light which we analyze with (3)spectroscopy.
