MX2000

MX2000 is the dominating visual aesthetic of motocross racing from the 1990s and the early 2000s. The name MX2000 is derived from the abbreviation for motocross, "MX", and the suffix "2000" which was a common suffix for bands, businesses and events in the 1990s which signified the optimism for the new millennium. MX2000 is a visual design language that expresses the extreme movement of motocross through bold colors, unrestrained typography and logobombing. The visual design also encompasses the materiality of motocross apparel, with a heavy use of synthetics such as moulded plastic, sublimation printed polyester fabrics and leather panelling.
The unique and expressive visual language stemmed from the subculture of early offroad motortcycle racers who developed motocross racing, and later invented the lifestyle, culture and industry around it, ultimately leading to mainstream success and global recognition within pop-culture. The global success and development of the motocross identity can partly be attributed to the x-games founded in 1995, which was a series of action sports events which gained media exposure through their big name sponsors, elite athletes and consistant fanbase. MX2000 signifies the unique vernacular design of sub-culture, which still inspires designers to this day with its bold colors, slanted typefaces and multi-layered designs.
