Press and science divulgation

Research Questions and Interests
Biomedical engineering - Q: How can we improve fMRI methods for dynamic functional connectivity? How can we use graph theory to study the human brain?
I am interested in developing new methods for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) especially for functional connectivity and inter-subject similarity. I am interested in applying existing complex network tools and adapting them to dynamic (time-varying) brain functional connectivity networks.

Cognitive Neuroscience - Q: What makes us synchronise with each-other? What makes our brains synchronise with other brains?
I am interested in inter-subject differences and similarities from behavioural to neuronal level in neuro-typical and clinical populations. I am also interested in sound perception and auditory scene analysis during listening of complex auditory stimuli (music, speech, complex auditory scene) specifically in the processes of temporal segmentation, stream perception and large-scale structures of musical composition.

Neurophysiology - Q: How is the network structure of the human brain? What is the relationship between neuronal activity, connectivity and the BOLD signal?
I am interested in the human connectome in neuro-typical and clinical populations, especially large-scale networks, subcortical-cortical dynamic interactions and brain network modularity.

Music cognition and computational musicology - Q: Is there an universal language in music?
I am interested in computational theories of music (e.g. generative theory of tonal music) and possible neural correlates of such models.

About me
I graduated in Telecommunication Engineering (University of Padua, 2002) and worked as a research assistant (2003-2004); research topic: patterns in time-series of internet traffic.

In 2004 I moved to London to work for the IT industry until end 2007, but decided to go back to the academy studying for a second master degree in music cognition: Music, Mind & Technology (University of Jyväskylä).

Since 2008, I have been working for the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Interdisciplinary Music Research employed by the Cognitive Brain Reasearch Unit, University of Helsinki.

In 2015 completed my PhD (Doctor of Technology) at Aalto University School of Science (former Helsinki University of Technology) combining fMRI and complex networks methods to understand brain functions. My supervisor was prof. Mikko Sams at the Brain & Mind Laboratory - Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (former department of Biomedical Engineering and Computational Science). I was a member of the aivoAALTO research team.

Since January 2016 I am a post doctoral researcher at Lauri Nummenmaa's Human Emotion Systems Lab.

My areas of experties include pattern recognition, time-series analysis and various non-linear methods. I am a proficient software developer using mainly: MATLAB, Python, PHP, Bash but also: AS3, C/C++/ObjectiveC, Visual Basic, JavaScript, Java.

I also work as free-lance software developer and system administrator for various IT companies. More info here.
