Design & Culture course. Critical Design assignment
Autumn 2014

More about the course: MyCourses | WebOodi
Critical design — a design that doesn't solve problems or aims for things to be put into production, but raises issues, asks questions or challenges assumptions.

Design and Culture is joint MA level course that provides an overview to the history of Finnish design focusing on the post war era. It illuminates the connections of design with the social, political, economical and technical development and the phenomena and ideologies in other fields of cultural life.

An assignment for the course was to create a poster or an artefact that would convey a critical message or commentary to the course's topics:
— connections between design and Finnish lifestyles, consumption practices and values
— role of design as an element of Finnish national identity or in Finnish mundane everyday

The results of the course were exhibited in Otaniemi, Espoo on December 8-19 2014.

The online exhibition is a selection of works that represent different topics selected by the students: from cultural stereotypes and devotion to national traditions in design to future scenarios and opportunities.
