ProjectΒΆ

The topic of the project is atomic scale friction - a conceptually simple yet physically complex phenomenon. However, besides learning about friction, as well as atomic structure and simulation techniques, the purpose of the project is to let you design, execute and analyse your own computational experiment.

The project is designed to follow the way real scientific experiments work, which also means you are dealing with an open problem that does not have a single correct answer. Instead, you should consider different ways to approach the task and choose the methods that you, as a group, consider to be the best. Also, as is typical in real problems, your first try might not be successful. In that case, one should try to understand why your idea did not work and how it can be improved. The Support team is also there to assist you throughout the project.

The research process you should more or less follow in the project is outlined in the next sections.
